Biodegradable and edible composites for use as feed packaging containers are provided. Broadly, the composites are formed from a mixture comprising fiber mixed with a non-petroleum based, biodegradable adhesive formed by modifying a starch, protein, or protein-rich flour. The mixture has a moisture content of less than about 20 % by weight, based upon the total weight of the mixture taken as 100 % by weight. The mixture is then molded at pressures of from about 150-600 psi and temperatures of from about 150-500 ~F to yield a final composite having a compressive strength of at least about 5 MPa. Preferred fibers include those derived from straw, corn stalks, sorghum stalks, soybean hulls, and peanut hulls. Preferred modifiers include NaOH, urea sodium dodecyl sulfate, sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate, and guanidine hydrochloride.

La présente invention concerne des composites comestibles et biodégradables destinés à servir de contenant d'emballage alimentaire. Ces composites sont fabriqués d'une façon générale à partir d'un mélange comprenant des fibres mélangées à un adhésif biodégradable sans pétrole préparé par la modification d'amidon, d'une protéine ou d'une farine riche en protéine. Ce mélange présente un contenu humide de moins de 20 % environ de la masse totale de ce mélange. Ce mélange est ensuite moulé sous une pression allant d'environ 150 à 600 psi et à des températures allant d'environ 150 à 500?0¿F de façon à produire un composite final présentant une résistance à la compression d'au moins 5Mpa environ. Parmi les fibres préférées on retient celle qui sont dérivées de la paille, des tiges de maïs, des tiges de sorgho, des pellicules de soja, et du son d'arachide. Les agents de modification préférés comprennent NaOH, le dodécyl sulfate de sodium d'urée, le dodécylbenzène sulfonate de sodium et le chlorhydrate de guanidine.
