ABSTRACT This invention relates to a biodegradable or digestible matrix and in particular, to a matrix suitable for controlled release of an active agent into an environment or for controlled rate of biodegradation or digestion. The matrix includes an amylaceous material or derivative thereof, less than about 25% w/w of a synthetic polymer and an active agent to be released. The invention also relates to a method for manufacture of the matrix wherein a hot melt is prepared by heating and subjecting to pressure a composition comprising an amylaceous material or a derivative thereof and sufficient water to provide a malt for subsequent forming into a matrix shape. The matrix shaped according to the invention are particularly suitable for use in agriculture.
