A method of forming solid, non-edible biodegradable, grain protein-based articles is provided wherein a grain protein formulation is heated to a maximum temperature of up to about 80 °C to create a substantially homogenous and flowable mixture which can be formed into biodegradable articles. The formulation includes from about 20-85 % by weight of grain protein, from about 5-75 96 by weight starch up to about 14 % by weight water, from about 10-40 % by weight plasticizer, and at least about 0.01 % by weight of a reducing agent such as sodium bisulfite for cleaving disulfide bonds present in the grain protein. Optional ingredients such as fillers, fiber, lubricant/mold release agents and colorants can also be used. The formulations can be processed in extrusion or injection molding equipment to create solid articles.
La présente invention concerne un procédé de formage d'articles solides biodégradables non comestibles à base de protéine granulaire, qui consiste à porter une formulation de protéine granulaire à une température maximale pouvant atteindre environ 80 DEG C de façon à créer un mélange sensiblement homogène et fluide capable d'être utilisé pour des articles biodégradables. Cette formulation contient environ 20 % à 85 % en poids de protéine granulaire, environ 5 % à 75 % en poids d'amidon, jusqu'à environ 14 % en poids d'eau, environ 10 % à 40 % en poids d'un plastifiant et au moins environ 0,01 % en poids d'un agent réducteur, le bisulfite de sodium par exemple, pour casser les liaisons bisulfure existant dans la protéine granulaire. On peut également employer des ingrédients facultatifs tels que des matières de charge, de la fibre, des lubrifiants ou des agents de démoulage et des colorants.
