An intra vaginal device for delivering a pharmaceutical agent (e.g. progesterone) into a recipient mammal. The active agent is carried in a matrix of a biodegradable polymer (such as poly .epsilon.-caprolactone or a starch-like polysaccharide) having an ability to provide (without reliance on a supporting spine) desired retention characteristics of a variable geometry retention device, an appropriate release profile during a finite insertion period and biodegradability upon removal from the mammal.

L'invention concerne un dispositif intra-vaginal permettant d'administrer un agent pharmaceutique (par exemple, de la progestérone) à un mammifère. L'agent actif est supporté dans une matrice de polymère biodégradable (par exemple du poly epsilon -caprolactone ou un polysaccharide de type amidon) permettant d'assurer (sans nécessiter de tige de support) les caractéristiques de rétention requises d'un dispositif de rétention à géométrie variable. Ce dispositif permet de libérer un produit de manière appropriée pendant une période d'insertion précise, et assure une biodégradabilité lors du retrait du mammifère.
