Compatibilized blends of a biodegradable hy- drophobic polyester, unmodified starch or other sim- ilar polysaccharide containing less than 1 % water by weight, other biodegradable polymers that may be hydrophobic, plasticizer, and other additives. The blends are produced in the absence of water. The preferred polyester polymer is poly(-caprolactone) and the preferred starch is from corn. A small amount of a unique stretching agent is incorporated to provide high elongations at break, especially in film-forming compositions containing a significant amount of starch. The starch is a discontinuous phase that may be completely or partially plasticized and the polyester polymer is the continuous phase. The preferred polymers have unique film-forming proper- ties and are resistant to water and moisture.

Cette invention concerne des mélanges rendus compatibles, constitués d'un polyester hydrophobe biodégradable, d'amidon non modifié ou d'un autre polysaccharide similaire contenant moins de 1% en poids d'eau, d'autres polymères biodégradables pouvant être des matières hydrophobes, des plastifiants, et d'autres additifs. On produit ces mélanges sans inclusion d'eau. Le polymère de polyester préféré est le poly('epsilon'-caprolactone) et l'amidon préféré provient du maïs. On incorpore une petite quantité d'un agent d'allongement spécifique pour assurer des allongements élevés à la rupture, tout particulièrement dans des compositions filmogènes contenant une quantité appréciable d'amidon. L'amidon est une phase discontinue qui peut être entièrement ou partiellement plastifiée et le polymère de polyester constitue la phase continue. Les polymères préférés présentent des propriétés filmogènes uniques et résistent à l'eau et à l'humidité.
