For converting native starch or starch derivatives into thermoplastic starch, it is proposed that the starch, which is principally responsible for the conversion, be mixed with at least one hydrophobic, biodegradable polymer. This hydrophobic, biodegradable polymer which serves as a plasticising or swelling agent, can be a polymer from the following list: an aliphatic polyester, a copolyester with aliphatic and aromatic blocks, a polyester amide, a polyester urethane, a polyethylene oxide-polymer or a polyglycol and/or mixtures thereof. During the melting process, when mixing the starch, such as native starch in particular or derivatives thereof, with the hydrophobic, biodegradable polymer as a plasticising or swelling agent, to homogenise the mixture, the water content is to be reduced to < 1 wt. % in relation to the weight of the mixture.

En vue de transformer l'amidon naturel ou des dérivés de l'amidon en amidon thermoplastique, il est prévu, conformément à l'invention, d'incorporer à l'amidon qui est responsable, en grande partie, de la transformation, au moins un polymère biodégradable hydrophobe. Ce polymère biodégradable hydrophobe, servant de plastifiant ou d'agent de gonflement, peut être un polymère appartenant à la liste ci-après: un polyester aliphatique, un copolyester à séquences aliphatiques et aromatiques, un polyesteramide, un polyesteruréthanne, un polymère de polyéthylène oxyde ou un polyglycol, et/ou des mélanges de ces produits. Lorqu'on mélange l'amidon, en particulier l'amidon naturel ou ses dérivés, dans la masse fondue, avec le polymère biodégradable hydrophobe comme plastifiant ou agent de gonflement pour l'homogénéisation du mélange, la teneur en eau doit être réduite à une valeur inférieure à 1 % en poids, par rapport au poids dudit mélange.
