BIODEGRADATION OF OILY WASTE Abstract of the Disclosure The present invention generally relates to a process for the biological oxidation of oily waste. The process is characterized by being undertaken in a bioreactor which contains a porous, substantially oleophilic matrix. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the process is completed in a passively aerated bioreactor which contains heat-treated peat as the oleophilic matrix. The process may be used to treat the types of oily wastes which are convertionally disposed of in landfarming operations. An advantage of this process is that it provides the potential to reduce the loss of leachates and to control the loss of volatiles. - 1 -
