A method for degrading an undesirable ether-based environmental contaminant by contacting the ether with a propane-oxidizing microorganism or with an isopropanol-oxidizing microorganism to convert the ether to innocuous compounds which are environmentally acceptable, including treating the ether-based contaminants in situ or removing them from the contaminated site for treatment in a bioreactor, examples of the ether-based contaminants being tertiary butyl ethers of the type utilized as gasoline oxygenates, for example, methyl tert- butyl ether, ethyl tent-butyl ether, and methyl tert-amyl ether, and also ether solvents, for example, tetrahydrofuran, and including also means for monitoring the degradation of methyl tert-butyl ether by evaluating the treated contaminated media for degradative intermediates, for example, tert-butyl alcohol and 2-hydroxy isobutyric acid, and further including contacting the ether with a microorganism that is effective in oxidizing 2-hydroxy-isobutyric acid.

Cette invention concerne un procédé permettant d'effectuer la dégradation de produits à base d'éther qui polluent l'environnement, lequel procédé consiste à mettre l'éther en contact avec un micro-organisme oxydant le propane ou avec un micro-organisme oxydant l'isopropanol. Ce procédé permet de transformer l'éther en composés qui ne présentent aucun danger pour l'environnement. Les polluants à base d'éther peuvent être traités in situ ou, encore, extraits de sites contaminés en vue de leur traitement dans un réacteur biologique. On peut citer comme exemples de polluants à base d'éther, des éthers de butyle tertiaire tels que ceux utilisés comme composés oxygénés dans l'essence, à savoir de l'éther de tert-butyle de méthyle, de l'éther de tert-butyle d'éthyle et de l'éther de tert-amyle de méthyle ou, encore, des solvants à base d'éther tels que du tetrahydrofurane. Cette invention concerne également un système permettant de contrôler la dégradation d'éther de tert-butyle de méthyle. Ce système consiste à évaluer la présence de produits intermédiaires de dégradation dans les milieux contaminés et traités, par exemple, celle d'alcool de tert-butyle et d'acide 2-hydroxy-isobutyrique. Ce système consiste ensuite à mettre l'éther en contact avec un micro-organisme capable d'oxyder efficacement l'acide 2-hydroxy-isobutyrique.
