An emulsified biofuel composition comprising: (A) a continuous phase comprising about 50-95 wt% of at least one liquid oil of vegetable or animal origin or mixtures thereof; (B) a water- containing dispersed phase comprising about 1-50 wt% water; (C) about 1-25 wt% of hydroxyl-containing organic compound selected from the group consisting of mono-, di-, tri- and polyhydric alcohols, provided that when a monohydric alcohol is used there is also present at least one of tert-butyl alcohol, at least one C2-C4 alkylene glycol or a mixture of both; (D) about 0.05-10 wt% of at least one emulsifier; wherein the dispersed water-containing droplets have an average particle size of less than about 20 microns. The biofuel is prepared from these components by mixing under high shear conditions, preferably with ultrasonic energy. The emulsifier(s) preferably exhibit a hydrophilic-lipophilic balance of about 8.5 to about 18 and the biofuel includes a cetane enhancer and mixture of an alcohol and mono- or poly-alkylene glycol.
Composition de biocombustible émulsionnée comprenant : (A) une phase continue comprenant environ 50-95 % en poids d'au moins une huile liquide d'origine végétale ou animale ou de mélanges de celles-ci ; (B) une phase dispersée contenant de l'eau comprenant environ 1-50 % en poids d'eau ; (C) environ 1-25 % en poids d'un composé organique contenant un ou plusieurs hydroxyles sélectionné dans le groupe constitué de monoalcools, de diols, de triols et de polyols, à condition que, lorsqu'on utilise un monoalcool, soit également présent l'alcool tert-butylique, d'au moins un (alkylène en C2-C4)glycol ou un mélange des deux ; (D) environ 0,05-10 % en poids d'au moins un émulsifiant ; les gouttelettes contenant de l'eau dispersées ayant une taille moyenne de particule inférieure à environ 20 microns. Le biocombustible est préparé à partir de ces composants en les mélangeant sous un cisaillement élevé, de préférence avec une énergie ultrasonique. Le ou les émulsifiants présentent de préférence une balance hydrophile-lipophile d'environ 8,5 à environ 18 et le biocombustible comprend un agent augmentant l'indice de cétane et un mélange d'un alcool et d'un monoalkylèneglycol ou d'un polyalkylèneglycol.
