A bioleaching process is utilized for the extraction of metals from coal fly ash (CFA). The CFA is suspended in an acidic sea water based culture medium and the suspension is incubated with a microorganism culture comprising at least one strain of Thiobacillus thiooxidans capable of growing and producing sulfuric acid in the sea water based acidic culture medium and thereby facilitating the extraction of metals from the CFA. The extracted metals are separated from the CFA raffinate and microorganism cells and are fractionated to provide metal-enriched fractions. A selected Thiobacillus thiooxidans strain is described which has been designated as Thiobacillus thiooxidans ZYR1, a sample of which has been deposited under No. 40453 at the National Collections of Industrial and Marine Bacteria Ltd. (NCIMB) at Aberdeen, Scotland. This selected strain is particularly suitable for the bioleaching of metals from coal fly ash.

Méthode de biolessivage utilisée pour l'extraction de métaux à partir de cendres volantes de charbon (CVC). Les CVC sont mises en suspension dans un milieu de culture à base d' eau de mer acide; la suspension est incubée avec une culture de microorganismes renfermant au moins une souche de Thiobacillus thiooxidans, capable de croître et de produire de l'acide sulfurique dans le milieu de culture acide à base d'eau de mer, et ainsi de faciliter l'extraction de métaux à partir de CVC. Les métaux extraits sont séparés du raffinat de CVC et des cellules de microorganismes, et fractionnés pour l'obtention de composantes riches en métaux. On décrit une souche de Thiobacillus thiooxidans, qui a été appelée Thiobacillus thiooxidans ZYR1 et dont un échantillon a été déposé sous le no 40453 aux National Collections of Industrial and Marine Bacteria Ltd. (NCIMB) à Aberdeen, en Écosse. Cette souche sélectionnée est particulièrement utile pour le biolessivage de métaux à partir de cendres volantes de charbon.
