ABSTRACT Detoxification of effluent water from a water extraction process for tar sands is enhanced biologically by adding a phosphorus nutrient to the effluent (contained in a holding pond or in a treatment plant) and thereafter maintaining the resulting effluent at a temperature for a time sufficient to enable the microorganisms normally present in the effluent to biodegrade the toxic compounds in the effluent to non-toxic compounds.
