Disclosed is a filtration system for the filtration of blood or a blood component, the system comprising a container for containing the blood or the blood component to be filtered, a receiving container for receiving the filtered blood or the blood component, a transfer line communicating between the container for the blood or the blood component to be filtered and the receiving container, a blood filter device capable of filtering the blood or the blood component carried in the transfer line between the container for the blood or the blood component to be filtered and the receiving container, and a gas outlet carried in the transfer line downstream of the filter device and upstream of the receiving container, the gas outlet including (a) a housing, (b) a first microporous membrane having first and second sides and being positioned in the housing with the first side in communication with the transfer line, the first microporous membrane being wettable by the filtered blood or the filtered blood component, and (c) a second microporous membrane superimposed on the second side of the first microporous membrane, the second microporous membrane being capable of permitting gas to pass therethrough, wherein the first and second microporous membranes are arranged to permit the gas to be vented from the gas outlet while the first microporous membrane remains unwetted with blood or blood component, and to permit the gas outlet to be sealed when the first microporous membrane is wetted with blood or blood component.
