This invention relates generally to methods of detecting and quantifying biomarkers of oxidative stress in proteins. The biomarker may be any amino acid that has undergone oxidation (or other modification, e.g. chloro- tyrosine, dityrosine). Emphasis is given herein on oxidized sulfur- or selenium-containing amino acids (SSAA). The biomarker of oxidative stress in proteins may be detected with an antibody that binds to oxidized amino acids, specifically oxidized sulfur- or selenium-containing amino acids. The antibody may be monoclonal or polyclonal. The presence of biomarker or amount of biomarker present in a sample may be used to aid in assessing the efficacy of environmental, nutritional and therapeutic interventions, among other uses.

L'invention concerne de manière générale des procédés de détection et de quantification de marqueurs biologiques du stress d'oxydation dans les protéines. Le biomarqueur peut se présenter comme n'importe quel acide aminé ayant subi l'oxydation (ou une autre modification, p.ex., chloro-tyrosine, dityrosine). Dans cette invention, l'accent est mis sur les acides aminés oxydés contenant du soufre ou du sélénium (SSAA). Le biomarqueur du stress d'oxydation dans les protéines peut être détecté au moyen d'un anticorps qui se lie aux acides aminés ayant subi l'oxydation, en particulier aux acides aminés oxydés contenant du soufre ou du sélénium. L'anticorps peut être monoclonal ou polyclonal. La présence du biomarqueur ou la quantité du biomarqueur présent dans un échantillon peut servir, entre autres, à estimer l'efficacité des interventions environnementales, nutritionnelles et thérapeutiques.
