A biopsy needle instrument (5) has selectable locking means (24) to permit or prevent the projection of a cannula (20) and a stylet (18) and separate loading members (12 and 14) allowing the cannula (20) and styles (18) to be loaded separately and yet fired sequentially using a single button (22). Another embodiment of the invention permits the independent firing of the styles (18) and the cannula (20).
