BIPOLAR ELECTRODES ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A bipolar electrode structure includes an anode layer of a passivatable metal, such as, titanium or tantalum, having an electro-conductive anode surface, usually including a platinum group metal or oxide, an iron or alloy thereof cathode layer and a barrier layer of electrically-conducting metal or alloy resistant to atomic hydrogen flow therethrough located between the anode and cathode layers. The barrier metal may be copper, gold, tin, lead, nickel, cobalt, cadmium, chromium, molybdenum or tungsten. The carrier layer prevents hydriding of the passivatable metal layer by permeation of hydrogen from the cathode face. - 1 -
