2059553 9015357 PCTABS00002 A birefringent polarizing device which separates a beam (1) into polarized component beams (9) and (10) by transmitting both components through plane parallel element (3). Separation occurs since one or both of plane parallel element (3) and element (2) is birefringent. Elements (2) and (4) are of the same refractive index or indices so that beams (9) and (10) emerge parallel to one another. Plane parallel element (3) may also be a space (3) which allows the device to be used with high powered lasers. Many variants are described.
