ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE New bis-(2,4-dinitrophenyl)-methylpyridinium compound useful as indicators in the detection of ammonia, for example, ammonia liberatea from urea in body flulas, are provided of the formula (I):- Image (I) wherein one of R1 and R2 represents a bis-(2,4-dinitrophenyl)- methyl radical and the other represents a lower alkyl radical, or, in the case of R2, can also represent a hydrogen atom or a trifluoronethyl radical, R3 ana R4 are hydrogen atoms or, together with the carbon atoms to whlch they are attached, represent a benzene ring and X ? is an acid anion and the betaine form thereof.
