The present invention relates to a bis-arylaryloxy catalyst system for the production of ethylene homopolymers or copolymers with .alpha.-olefins, which has high catalytic activity. More particularly, it relates to a transition metal catalyst comprising a group-IV transition metal as a central metal, a cyclopentadiene derivative around the central metal, and two aryloxide ligands substituted with aryl derivatives at the ortho-positions, the ligands not being bridged to each other, as well as a catalyst system comprising said catalyst and an aluminoxane co-catalyst or a boron compound co-catalyst, and a method for producing high-molecular-weight ethylene homopolymers or copolymers with .alpha.-olefins using the same.

La présente invention concerne un système catalyseur bis-arylaryloxy utilisé pour produire des homopolymères ou des copolymères d'éthylène avec des .alpha.-oléfines, qui présente une forte activité catalytique. De manière plus particulière, cette invention porte sur un catalyseur à base de métal de transition qui comprend un métal de transition du groupe IV en tant que métal central, un dérivé cyclopentadiène situé autour du métal central et deux ligands aryloxyde substitués par des dérivés aryle au niveau des positions ortho, les ligands n'étant pas reliés ensemble par un pont, et porte également sur un système catalyseur comprenant ledit catalyseur et un co-catalyseur aluminoxane ou un co-catalyseur formé d'un composé de bore et sur un procédé de production d'homopolymères ou de copolymères d'éthylène à poids moléculaire élevé avec des .alpha.-oléfines.
