Polyamide fibrous substrates which resist staining by acid dyes, and processes for preparing the same which comprise applying a base-catalyzed condensation product formed by the reaction of a bis(hydroxyphenyl)sulfone with formaldehyde to give a product known as a resole. The resulting non-sulfonated, non-carboxylated resole stain- resist agents can be applied at higher pH values than prior art stain-resists which were sulfonated or carboxylated.
