State-of-the-art data transmission equipment, such as modems with standardized AT instruction set, generally allow various data transmission speeds from and to the data terminal. In order to obtain a process which allows high bit rates to be reliably recognized with small loading of the CPU of the data transmission equipment, the serial data flow runs through a digital delaying stage, the duration of the first bits having the value "0" is measured while the data flow runs through the delaying stage, and the bit rate calculated from said measurement is programmed into an integrated serial data transmission component. Also disclosed is a device for carrying out said process.
