The bitumen/polymer component has a ball and ring penetration and softening temperature such that the PFEIFFER index, which links these values, is greater than 5 for the said component. This bitumen/polymer component is obtained by contacting a hydrocarbon fraction having a kinematic viscosity at 100 DEG C from 0.5 x 10<-4> m<2>/s and 3 x 10<-4> m<2>/s with 5 to 25 % by weight of the said fraction and a sulphur cross-linked elastomer in the presence of an effective quantity of a sulphur producing coupling agent, at a temperature between 100 DEG C and 230 DEG C with agitation. The bitumen/polymer component may be used to provide bitumen/polymer compositions with very low heat sensitivity which may be used for road surfacings, coated materials or impervious facings.
