ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Bitumen is separated from tar sand using a shallow, cylindrical tank for receiving the sand and diesel oil. The diesel oil solvent and sand are mixed using rotating paddles, and the oil/solvent mixture thus separated is decanted by tilting the tank into a storage container or fed directly to a refinery for further treatment. Water is added to the tank and mixed with the sand using the paddles. Oil rising to the top of the supernatant liquid is scraped into radially extending troughs using rotat- able skimmer blades mounted in the tank above the paddles. The material thus skimmed is also fed to storage or the refinery.
