ABSTRACT The properties of black chromate coatings on metal substrates are improved by treating the coating with an aqueous solution of sulphur and/or at least one sulphur- containing compound selected from oxy-anions of sulphur having reducing properties and organic thio compound particularly sodium thiosulphate, sodim thioglycolate and thio urea. Treatment of the black chromate coating ensures that light fastness and corrosion resistance are reliably obtained.
