ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The use of furnace black of particular characteristics modified and treated in a particular manner as a carbon black colouring agent. In particular the agent is prepared by mixing a carbon black colou???g agent prepared by mixing a hydrophobic vehicle with an aqueous slurry containing a carbon black obtained by treating a furnace black having an electromicroscopic average particle size from about 5 to about 35 mµ with a modifier selected from a group consisting of ozone, nitric acid, hydrogen peroxide, chromic acid and permanganate and removing water from the mixture. The colouring agent has uniform particle size and excellent characteristics of jetness, gloss, dispersion stability as well as the dispersibility as a colouring agent for paints, inks, resins and the like.
