ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention provides a process for separating the organic constituents of "black-liquor" that is formed under chemical pulping of cellulose products. This black-liquor is heated with CO and/or H2 under pressure which results in the conversion of said organic constituents into a water-insoluble liquid or oil which can be separated from the water phase by usual means. Said conversion can be effected in one or more separate stages, the conversion conditions being different from stage to stage.
