ABSTRACT A rotary blade for lawnmowers and the like havng a plurality of flexible and resilient blade members angularly spaced about a central hub portion. The blade is made of plastic, plastic composite, or composite material and is designed to cut grass and the like efficiently but to deflect around obstacles rather than cutting through them and possibly causing injury. Points of waekness may be provided to ensure that the blade members break off rather than cutting through an obstacle such as the operator's foot. In order to suit different existing machines the blade may have a specially adapted hub portion, and the blades may incorporate a step to position the cutting edges correctly in relation to the machines spindle. The blade may be provided with, for example, upturned vanes to facilitate grass collection, and the tips of the blade members may be weighted to provide sufficient flywheel effect for machines powered by reciprocating engines.
