ABSTRACT An illuminated blankout sign adapted to be exposed to ambient light, comprising an enclosure; light generating means within the enclosure; a front face for the enclosure adapted to change from a first colour when backlit via the light generating means to black when illuminated only by the ambient light; and indicia applied to the front face for conveying information, whereby the indicia are visible from outside of the enclosure with the first colour as background when the front face is backlit via the light generating means and the indicia are not visible from outside of the enclosure when the front face is illuminated only by the ambient light.
