Novel bleach and oxidation catalysts, a method of bleaching substrates using these catalysts and bleaching (detergent) compositions containing the catalysts are reported. The catalysts are a manganese-based co-ordination complex of the general formula : [LnMnmXp]z Yq wherein Mn is manganese in the IV-oxidation state; n and m are independent integers from 2-8; X represents a co-ordination or bridging species; p is an integer from 0-32; Y is a counter-ion, the type of which is dependent on the charge z of the complex which can be positive, zero or negative; q = z/[charge Y]; and L is a ligand which is an organic molecule containing a number of hetero-atoms selected from N, P, O, and S, which co-ordinates via all or some of its hetero-atoms and/or carbon atoms to the Mn(IV)-center(s), which latter are anti-ferromagnetically coupled.

L'invention porte sur de nouveaux catalyseurs de blanchiment et d'oxydation, sur une méthode de blanchiment de substrats avec ces catalyseurs et sur des préparations de blanchiment (détergents) contenant ces catalyseurs. Les catalyseurs sont des complexes de coordination basés sur le manganèse, présentant la formule générale: [LnMnmXp z Yq, dans laquelle Mn est du manganèse à l'état d'oxydation IV; n et m sont des nombres entiers indépendants compris entre 2 et 8 inclusivement; X représente une espèce de coordination ou de pontage; p est un nombre entier compris entre 0 et 32 inclusivement; Y est un contre-ion dont le type dépend de la charge z du complexe qui peut être positive, nulle ou négative; q = z/[charge Y ; et L est un ligand constitué d'une molécule organique contenant un certain nombre d'hétéro-atomes choisis parmi N, P, O et S, qui forme, grâce à tous ou à certains de ses hétéro-atomes et/ou atomes de carbone, une liaison de coordination avec le(s) centre(s) Mn(IV) à couplage antiferromagnétique.
