Bleached shellac, methods for producing the bleached shel-lac and coating comprising the bleached shellac are disclosed The bleached shellac comprises reduced salts, reduced water soluble and water insoluble contaminants, reduced microbial contamination, enhanced shelf life, enhanced hardness and enhanced scratchability The bleached shellac is produced by dissolving seedlac in alkaline solution, bleaching the solu- tion with alkaline bleach, precipitating bleached shellac from the solution using an acid and washing the precipitated bleached shellac with purified water
