The stability of a substantially water-insoluble organic peroxyacid against exothermic decomposition initiated by heat, is enhanced by contacting the peroxyacid with a binding agent for transition metal ions. In a preferred embodiment, the stability is enhanced by precipitating the peroxy acid in the presence of the binding agent.
