ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for bleaching lignocellulosic material such as wood pulp by treatment with a mixture of nitrogen dioxide and nitric oxide, the nitric oxide being present in molar excess. The treatment with nitrogen oxides is followed by washing and treatment with caustic. Treatment with oxygen under supra atmospheric pressure may precede or follow the treatment with mixed nitrogen oxides. The substitution of nitrogen compounds for the chlorine-containing compounds normally employed in the bleaching of wood pulp reduces the level of polluting materials in the effluent of a pulp mill employing the process.
