ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention provides a process for bleaching kraft pulp. The kraft pulp is subjected to the action of oxygen, the kraft pulp having fibres dispersed in an aqueous alkaline medium containing a complexing agent. The complexing agent employed is an alkali metal salt of at least one aminomethylenephosphonic acid of the formula Image where n is 2 to 6 and m has a value of from 0 to 5, the salt being present in a concentration of at least 0.01% based on the dry weight of the pulp, provided that where the concentration is 0.1% or less, the aqueous medium also contains a magnesium salt.
