A bleed out detector for detecting bleed outs in direct chill casting of molten metals includes a detection means (19, 20) for detecting the presence of molten metal (24) at an exterior surface of a casting (23). As most bleed outs occur near the outlet of casting mould (10), the detection means (19, 20) is preferably positioned at or adjacent the outlet of the mould (10). The detection means may include an infrared detector, pressure tubes, a sound meter or an electrical detector. A pyroelectric film, such as a strip of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is the preferred detection means. The detector may form part of an alarm circuit or a control circuit.
