Solid polymer membranes comprised of a high charge density sulfonated poly(phenylene oxide) alone or blended with poly(vinylidene fluoride) in varied ratios have improved membrane characteristics. These membranes possess very high ionic conductivity, are inexpensive and suitable for solid polymer electrolytes in electrochemical applications, especially for the polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell. PEM fuel cell assemblies with this membrane have enhanced performance.
L'invention porte sur des membranes de polymères solides aux caractéristiques améliorées composées de poly(oxyde de phénylène) sulfoné à haute densité de charge, seul, ou mélangé dans des proportions variables à du poly(fluorure de vinylidène). Ces membranes à très forte conductivité ionique sont peu onéreuses et peuvent servir d'électrolytes polymères solides dans des applications électrochimiques, et notamment comme membranes électrolytiques polymères (PEM) pour piles à combustibles. Les piles à combustible utilisant ce type de membrane présentent des performances améliorées.
