A self-plugging blind rivet (10) comprises a tubular rivet shell (11) and a stem (15) disposed in the bore (14) of the shell (11). The shell (11) comprises a generally cylindrical shank (12) with a preformed head (13) at one end. The stem (15) projects from the head end of the shell (11), and has a head (19) which abuts the tail end face (21). The shank (12) has two axially spaced zones (25, 29) of reduced diameters formed by rolling or crimping, and an intermediate zone (26, 27, 28) between them. The projecting stem is pulled to compress and deform the shank (12) to form a blind head. In order to avoid cracking of the blind head and to improve the grip range of the rivet, the intermediate zone has two transition zones (26, 28) forming an angle of 2° to 20° with the axis of the shank (12) in which the diameter of the shank increases progressively from that of the zones (25, 29) to a maximum in the intermediate zone (26, 27, 28).
