ABSTRACT Known blind, self-plugging rivet assemblies comprise a tubular shell with an enlarged head at one end, and a stem which extends through the bore of the shell, where the stem has an enlarged head beyond the tail end of the shell. In this invention, the shell has a weakened zone formed by three slits extending along part of the shell shank and spaced apart equiangularly around it. A stem head lies beyond the shell tail end, and has an underhead surface which is slightly convex and is bounded by a sharp end. This arrangement facilitates axial compression of the rivet assembly and subsequent outward bending of the portions of the shell between the slits to conveniently secure together two members. The stem has a pulling portion connected by a breakneck to a plugging portion which is an interference fit in the shell bore. Adjacent the breakneck the plugging portion has a cylindrical skirt which, when the rivet has been installed, and the pulling portion detached at the break- neck can be deformed outwardly to lock the plugging portion to the shell. A simple, yet effective, means of locking the plugging portion to the shell is thus provided.
