ABSTRACT A blood access device and a surgical method for its implantation. The device is adapted to be positioned adjacent a blood vessel such that a flange means of the blood access device is positioned so as to enclose a portion of a blood vessel exterior. After the blood access device is secured to the blood vessel, and the body within which it is implanted, that portion of the blood vessel which is en- closed by said flange is removed. A plugging member is pro- vided for sealing the blood passageway when it is desired to prevent blood flow. The device may be provided with vascular grafting material which is utilized both to provide struc- tural support for tissue ingrowth and to minimize blood loss during the implanting operation.
