ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method and apparatus for automatically analyzing red blood cells in a blood cell sample stained to enhance selected constituents of the blood cell sample. In particular, red blood cells are analyzed to determine how many of the red blood cells contain RNA and can therefore be categorized as reticulocytes. The number of red blood cells and the number of reticulocytes are counted to determine the percentage of reticulocytes in the blood cell sample. This percentage is used as one measurable indication of the composition of the blood sample and the health of the blood donor. In addition, other attributes of the red blood cells are determined, including cell shape, pallor, and hemoglobin content. These attributes in combination with the reticulocyte percentage combines to give a complete picture of the health of the blood and consequently the blood donor.
