2076677 9212684 PCTABS00014 The method is provided of collecting blood with a donor needle (14) inserted into the vein, which comprises an improvement of: after drawing a desired amount of blood into the blood storage container (12) connected to one end of flexible tubing (28), occluding flow through said flexible tubing at a point (42) adjacent a flexible, transversely enlarged tubing portion (34) positioned at a location on the tubing spaced from the ends. The flow occluding point (42) is located between the enlarged tubing portion (34) and the container (12), and the tubing portion (34) is initially of lay-flat type, prior to passing blood through it. One then draws more blood through the needle (14) to enter and fill the enlarged tubing portion (34). One then occludes flexible tubing (26) between the enlarged tubing portion (34) and the needle (14) prior to withdrawing the needle (14) from the vein of the blood donor.
