ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A blood transfusion filtration unit having a filter cartridge disposed within a housing The improvement comprises a manually operable air vent valve disposed in an upper portion of the housing. The air vent valve comprises an actuating member which itself comprises a circular portion disposed on the outside of the housing. This circular portion has a resilient periphery in contact with an outside surface of the housing. A reduced diameter portion extends from the center of the circular portion through an opening in the housing and an expanded end portion is disposed from the reduced diameter portion within the housing. The end portion functions to provide a seal with an inside surface of the housing. An annular air filtration media is disposed between the housing and the resilient periphery of the circular portion of the actuating member on the outside of the housing. The resilient periphery is deformed in response to manual pressure applied to the circular portion so as to bias the expanded end portion in such a manner as to break the seal and provide a continuous unobstructed flow path of air from within the housing, through the filtration media, to atmosphere.
