ABSTRACT A blotting composition is provided, comprising a transfer substrate such as a gel containing, e.g., DNA, RNA or a protein, applied to a polyaldehyde activated microporous polymer membrane having A) an internal surface which includes pore surfaces and interstices and B) an external surface; where a substantially all such surfaces of the microporous membrane are physically combined with the polyaldehyde by precasting or membrane post treatment with a solution of the polyaldehyde in an amount sufficient to effectively activate the microporous membrane. Also provided is a method of transferring (e.g., by gel blotting, spot-wetting, dot blot, electro-transfer, etc.) a biological sample to an immobilizing matrix, comprising applying the sample as a substrate to the micropores of a polyaldehyde activated microporous polymer membrane having pore structure physically combined in its formation with the polyaldehyde as a solute by precasting or membrane post treatment.
