ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A warning system and ram saver for a blow out preventer includes a control cylinder connected to the lines supplying hydraulic fluid to the blow out preventer, and a pneumatic diverter valve connected to the hydraulic cylinder. The diverter valve is in the air line between the air clutch control valve and supply for the drum clutch, which operates the main hoisting winch to move the drill string through the blow out preventer. When the blow out preventer is closed and the drum clutch control valve is opened in an attempt to operate the main hoisting winch, the diverter valve prevents air flow to the drum clutch and causes the air to flow to a horn, which provides a warning that the blow out preventer is closed.
