ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention provides a filament release device for use in radiosondes, comprising a bobbin member having an upper end adapted to be fixed securely to a lighter-than-air balloon and a filament for connecting the balloon to a radiosonde wound on said bobbin member, said bobbin member increasing in width in a downwards direction whereby the filament unwinds from said bobbin member in a controlled manner during ascent of the balloon.
