ABSTRACT Disclosed is a body implantable lead having pressure-cushioned electrode which ameliorates the effects of undesirable interactions between the lead and tissue contacted by it. The electrode is provided with a trauma- reducing cushioning body of a soft, compliant, water-swellable, polymeric, water-insoluble material inert to body tissues and fluids. The material consists essentially of a hydrogel which is ionically conductive.
