A bone alignment assembly (20) is disclosed having bone anchor subassemblies (26) for securing to both bones (32), and a bone position retainer (24), wherein the bone position retainer (24) includes a longitudinal member (24a) for maintaining a desired alignment of the bones (32) when the bone anchor assemblies (20) are secured to the bone position retainer (24). Each of the bone anchor subassemblies (26) includes a shaft (36), and one or more pairs of components (e.g., washers (68, 94)) wherein the components of each pair have mating spherical concave (72), and convex (68) surfaces that can mate together in a plurality of angular positions. When the shaft (36) extends through each of the pairs of mating components (68, 94), and also through a passageway (28) of the bone position retainer (24) that is sandwiched between the two pairs of mating components (68, 94), the shaft (38) can be secured at any one of a plurality of orientations relative to the bone position retainer (24).
