A dual energy densitometer (10) includes a solid state linear x-ray detector (13) which may be swept across the patient (16) with the movement of both to produce a matrix (29) of data elements (31) representing attenuation through the patient (16). Each of these data elements (31) may be characterized as to its material type by the use of the data element values, templates representing general rules to be applied to the bone and operator input. The operator input is provided by a cursor (228) controlled paintbrush which changes classifications of individual pixels based on a selected brush type.
