ABSTRACT A book cover applicator for applying a cover to a multiple sheet filler in which the sheets of the filler are secured together along their spine with a heat activateable adhesive which serves to bind together the filler and the cover. The applicator includes a sheet clamp mounted adjacent the surface on which the filler is supported moveable to and from a clamping position, a spine clamp also mounted adjacent the support surface moveable to and from a clamping position in which it engages the spine and the cover, an elongated heat application element moveable to and from a heat application position in thermally conductive relation with the spine adhesive, cam actuator means for moving the sheet and spine clamps and the heat application element to and from their respective clamping and heat application positions, and control means responsive to the positions of the spine clamp and the heat application element for operating the cam actuator means, the control means de- actuating the cam actuator means during heating and cooling of the spine adhesive.
