19 Abstract An apparatus for monitoring the sequence of signatures in an assembly containing a plurality of parallel signatures. A machine readable code is printed on the rear fold of each signature and, once the signatures are gathered and aligned parallel to each other, an optical code reader reads the codes of each signature in the assembly. The optical code reader sends the code information to an electronic data processor which compares the sequence of the codes in the assembly to desired a program sequence. If the compared code does not match the programmed code, then an output signal is produced.
