A boom control system includes a pair of pressure reducing valves for communication with lifting circuits of a boom. The pressure reducing valve maintains a set point pressure in the respective lifting circuit. An elevation monitor, for example an ultrasonic sensor, monitors elevation of the boom. A controller controllably varies the set point pressures of the pressure reducing valves responsive to elevation of the boom structures for maintaining the elevation of the boom structures substantially at a desired elevation level.
