A releasable downrigger clip that utilizes motion through the water column to ascend and descend along a downrigger line to direct a fishing lure to a desired depth automatically. After releasing the fishing line the clip returns to the surface automatically for reuse. It makes a positive connection to the downrigger line by means of a locking slider or roller mechanism that clips onto the downrigger line. The elevator plane utilizes the drag from the fishing gear to descend the unit. After releasing the fishing gear, the elevator plane is realigned by the return spring to ascend, allowing the operator to continue fishing operations without having to reconfigure the downrigger apparatus or retrieve the downrigger line.
